Wentworth was a volunteer who served as a private and corporal with the 6th Massachusetts Volunteer Militia from April through August 1861, with the 22nd Massachusetts from September 1861 through August 1862, and under the assumed name of “Charles E. Nelson” with the 32nd and 33rd Maine from April 1864 until the end of the war in 1865.
